Kids Shoe Size Calculator and Chart: Baby, Toddler and Big Kid Sizes

Kids' shoe sizes don't follow age, so the only reliable way to pick one is to measure. Enter the length of your child's longer foot below and the calculator finds the US size on Stride Rite's chart. Add the foot's circumference if you want a width, too.

How to Measure Your Child's Foot

  1. Stand your child on a sheet of paper with their weight on both feet, heel against a wall.
  2. Mark the tip of the longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark.
  3. Measure both feet and use the longer one. Stride Rite's advice is that if one foot is bigger, or your child falls between two sizes, you buy the bigger size so neither foot is cramped.
  4. For width, wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the foot and enter that as the circumference.

Measure again soon. Stride Rite says children's feet can grow half a size every 2 to 4 months, and recommends measuring every two months.

How Kids' Shoe Sizes Work

Baby shoes are often sold by age in months, but Stride Rite still recommends measuring, since some babies grow faster than others. On its chart, sizes 1 to 3 are baby sizes, 3.5 to 10 are little kid sizes and 10.5 onward are big kid sizes. After 13.5 the numbering starts again at youth size 1 (1Y) and runs to 7Y, where adult sizing takes over.

Kids Shoe Size Questions

What Size Shoe Does a 1-Year-Old Wear?

Stride Rite labels size 4 as fitting about 9 to 12 months, but measure rather than going by age; babies' feet vary.

What Comes After Toddler Size 13.5?

Youth size 1 (1Y). The numbers restart and run up to 7Y on Stride Rite's chart.

Should I Buy Shoes a Size up to Grow into?

Stride Rite's advice is to buy the bigger size when your child is between sizes, and to measure every two months because feet grow quickly.
