Best Toddler Shoes: First Walkers, Soft Soles and Wide Fits

Babies don't need shoes until they walk outside. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says feet develop best unconfined in the early months, and socks are enough for warmth. Once your child walks outdoors, shoes protect their feet, and the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) recommends light shoes with flexible soles.
The five picks below run from about $25 to $60. Measure first with our kids shoe size calculator, since toddler sizes don't follow age.

Best Toddler Shoes
#1 · Best first walker
Stride Rite Soft Motion Artie Sneaker
| Upper | Leather and canvas |
|---|---|
| Closure | Hook-and-loop with elastic laces |
| Footbed | Memory foam, leather insole |
| Widths | Medium, wide, extra wide |
| APMA | Approved (listing) |
| Sold by | Amazon |
Stride Rite designed its Soft Motion line for children taking their first steps, and the listing says these styles are APMA approved. The Artie has a leather and canvas upper, a leather lining and a memory foam footbed.
It closes with a hook-and-loop strap over elastic laces, the kind of secure closure the APMA recommends so toddlers don't grip with their toes to keep a shoe on. It comes in medium, wide and extra-wide widths, which helps with the APMA's advice that the toe box be at least as wide as the foot.
It was $37.70 from Amazon for the size we checked, with a 4.6 rating from about 2,900 reviews.
Good for
- Made for first walkers, APMA approved per listing
- Three widths
Watch Out for
- Leather needs wiping, not washing
- Pricier than the Taye
#2 · Best value
Stride Rite 360 Taye 2.0 Sneaker
| Upper | Faux leather |
|---|---|
| Closure | Hook-and-loop |
| Fit | Removable insole for wide fit |
| Footbed | Memory foam |
| Care | Washable (description) |
| Sold by | Amazon |
The Stride Rite Taye 2.0 has the highest rating here, 4.8 from about 6,000 reviews, for $29.95 from Amazon.
Its insole lifts out to make a wider fit, so one pair can adjust to a chubbier foot. It has a hook-and-loop strap, a padded tongue and collar and a memory foam footbed, and Stride Rite's description calls it washable.
The upper is faux leather rather than the breathable mesh or leather the APMA suggests. It comes in infant sizes and wide toddler sizes.
Good for
- 4.8 rating for about $30
- Adjustable width
Watch Out for
- Synthetic upper breathes less
- Fewer toddler sizes listed
#3 · Best soft sole
Robeez Soft Soles Baby Shoes
| Sole | Soft suede, non-slip |
|---|---|
| Closure | Elastic ankle |
| Ages | 0 to 24 months |
| Sizing | Roomy |
| APMA | Approved (listing) |
| Sold by | Robeez |
Robeez Soft Soles have a soft suede sole that the listing says flexes and bends with every step, close to going barefoot. They suit babies who are crawling or cruising and early walkers indoors. The listing says they're approved by the APMA.
An elastic ankle keeps them on, and the suede sole is non-slip. Robeez sizes them roomy, from 0 to 24 months.
A suede sole won't protect feet outdoors like a rubber sneaker sole. It was $38.00, sold by Robeez, with a 4.6 rating from about 3,900 reviews.
Good for
- Closest to barefoot
- Stays on with an elastic ankle
Watch Out for
- Not for outdoor walking
- Spot clean only
#4 · Best wide fit
New Balance 574 New-B Hook and Loop Sneaker
| Fit | Generous toe box and instep |
|---|---|
| Widths | Medium, wide, extra wide |
| Closure | Hook-and-loop |
| Sole | Flexible, rubber pods |
| Sizes | Infant 2 to 4.5 |
| Sold by | Zappos |
New Balance built the 574 New-B for first walkers, with what the listing calls a generous toe box and instep and a flexible construction. That matches the APMA's advice on room for the toes and a sole that bends.
It comes in medium, wide and extra-wide infant sizes, and the hook-and-loop strap adjusts the fit. Rubber pods on the sole add grip and wear.
It's the priciest pick at $59.95, sold by Zappos, with a 4.5 rating from about 560 reviews.
Good for
- Roomy toe box, three widths
- Grippy rubber outsole
Watch Out for
- About $60
- Infant sizes only on this listing
#5 · Best budget
Skechers Microspec Texlor Sneaker
| Sizes | Toddler 4 to 10, little kid |
|---|---|
| Closure | Stretch laces and hook-and-loop |
| Sole | Flexible rubber traction |
| Upper | Mesh and synthetic |
| Care | Machine washable |
| Sold by | Amazon |
The Skechers Microspec Texlor is a light sneaker for confident walkers, from toddler size 4 up into little kid sizes. At $25.03 from Amazon it's the cheapest pick, in line with the AAP's advice not to spend a lot on shoes children outgrow in months.
It slips on with stretch laces and a hook-and-loop strap, and the flexible rubber outsole gives the nonskid grip the AAP recommends. The upper mixes mesh and synthetic, and it goes in the washing machine.
It has a 4.7 rating from about 3,200 reviews. Its cushioned midsole is thicker than the soft first-walker shoes above.
Good for
- About $25, machine washable
- Covers toddler to little kid sizes
Watch Out for
- Thicker sole than first-walker shoes
- No wide width listed

When Does a Toddler Need Shoes?
Not until they walk outside. The AAP says babies' feet develop best when they aren't confined in shoes, and that socks are all that's needed to keep them warm. Once children walk outdoors, they need shoes for protection.
The APMA agrees: for younger children, it says going barefoot or wearing shoes that allow natural movement is best. When your child does wear shoes, it recommends light ones with flexible soles that bend easily while still protecting the foot.
How a Toddler Shoe Should Fit
- Toe room: the APMA suggests about 10 to 15 mm (roughly half an inch) in front of the longest toe. The AAP puts it as about a finger's width between the big toe and the inside of the shoe.
- Toe box: at least as wide as the widest part of the foot. The APMA doesn't recommend narrow, tapered shoes.
- Closure: laces or hook-and-loop, so the shoe stays on without your child clawing or gripping with their toes, the APMA says.
- Sole: nonskid, such as a sneaker sole, to help your toddler keep their footing on slippery floors, the AAP says.
- Two feet, two sizes: if one foot is bigger, the APMA says to buy for the bigger foot.
The AAP's rule: it's better to have no shoes at all than shoes that are too tight. Check the fit about once a month.
How Often to Buy New Shoes
The AAP says a toddler's feet grow so fast that a first pair may not last more than 2 or 3 months, so it advises buying well-made shoes without spending a lot. The APMA suggests checking size every 4 to 6 months as children get older, because of growth and differences between brands.
Our kids shoe size calculator turns a foot measurement into a US size and width using Stride Rite's chart.
How to Choose Toddler Shoes
Soft Sole or Sneaker
A soft sole like the Robeez is closest to barefoot and suits crawling, cruising and indoor walking. For outdoors, a flexible rubber sole like the Stride Rite, New Balance or Skechers protects better and grips.
Width
The APMA wants the toe box at least as wide as the foot. The Stride Rite Artie and New Balance 574 come in wide and extra wide, and the Taye's insole lifts out for more room.
Materials
The APMA prefers breathable materials like mesh and leather over non-breathable synthetics, which can trap sweat. The Artie uses leather and canvas; the Skechers mixes mesh and synthetic; the Taye is faux leather.
Easy on and Off
Hook-and-loop straps, like on four of these picks, are quick to fasten on a wriggling toddler and still hold the shoe securely.
Toddler Shoe Questions
Should My Baby Wear Shoes Before Walking?
The AAP says socks are enough in the early months. If you want something on their feet indoors, a soft-soled shoe like the Robeez has a non-slip suede sole, according to its listing.
Are Hand-Me-Down Shoes OK?
Check that the sole still bends, the heel isn't worn down and the fit leaves toe room. The APMA says to see a podiatrist if you notice concerns with your child's gait or unusual wear patterns on their shoes.
My Toddler Walks on Tiptoe. Is That a Shoe Problem?
The AAP says toe walking is normal in early walking, but walking on the toes or balls of the feet after age 2 should be checked by your pediatrician.
The Bottom Line
For first steps, the Stride Rite Soft Motion Artie is flexible, secure and comes in three widths. The Stride Rite Taye 2.0 is the best value at about $30, and Robeez Soft Soles are the pick for crawlers and indoor walking. Choose the New Balance 574 for wide feet, or the Skechers Microspec for a cheap, washable sneaker once your toddler walks confidently. Whatever you buy, leave a finger's width at the toe and check the fit every month.
