Best Stroller Travel Systems: Car Seat and Stroller Combos

A travel system pairs an infant car seat with a stroller it clicks into, so you can move a sleeping baby from the car to the sidewalk without unbuckling them. Four of the five picks list the car base in the box too.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says babies under 1 should always ride rear-facing, and infant seats only face the rear, so every seat here is rear-facing. The five picks run from about $144 to $550.

Travel System Safety: Car Seat Rules and Stroller Rules
A travel system falls under two sets of rules. The infant seat is a car seat, covered by NHTSA, and NHTSA says to follow the seat maker's height and weight limits and your car's manual when you install it. The stroller is covered by the CPSC's federal stroller standard, 16 CFR 1227, which includes tests for car seats used on strollers and for head entrapment between the car seat and the stroller.
Two things to remember: click the infant seat only into a stroller its maker lists as compatible, and check the click before you let go. And the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says that if your baby falls asleep in the car seat or stroller, you should move them to a firm, flat sleep surface on their back as soon as you can.
Register the car seat with its maker so you get recall notices. Our article on checking a car seat recall explains how.
How to Choose a Travel System
Check the Infant Seat First
The seat is the part your baby will use in the car every day, so compare its limits and install aids before the stroller. On these listings, top weights run from 30 to 35 pounds. The Chicco's KeyFit seat has the most installation aids.
Flat Mode for Newborns
The Graco's pramette and the Passport Switch's carriage mode let a newborn lie back without the car seat. The EZ Ride and Doona carry a newborn in the car seat only.
What Happens After the Infant Seat
When your baby reaches the infant seat's height or weight limit, the car seat part is done. With the Graco, Chicco and Baby Trend systems, you keep using the stroller with its toddler seat and buy a convertible car seat. With the Doona, you need both a new seat and a new stroller.
Weight and Fold
The Graco, Passport Switch and Chicco strollers weigh 20.9 to 24.9 pounds on their listings, and the Doona weighs 17.2 pounds with the seat. Check folded sizes against your trunk.
Travel System Questions
Is a Travel System Worth It?
If you want to move a baby between car and stroller without unbuckling, yes. If you'd rather start with a convertible car seat, which NHTSA notes usually has higher rear-facing limits, buy the stroller on its own.
Can I Use Any Car Seat with Any Stroller?
No. Use only the seats the stroller maker lists as compatible, with the adapters it names.
How Long Can My Baby Stay in the Car Seat on the Stroller?
The AAP says to move a sleeping baby out of a car seat or stroller to a flat sleep surface as soon as you can.

The Bottom Line
The Graco Modes Pramette Travel System is the best all-round pick, with a pramette mode and a reversible toddler seat. The Chicco Bravo Trio has the highest rating and the easiest-to-install seat. The Baby Trend Passport Switch gives you six modes for about $184, and the EZ Ride is the cheapest full set at about $144. The Doona is the most compact if you're willing to pay for it and replace it sooner.
