Best High Chairs: Compact, Convertible and Easy-Clean Picks

You'll use a high chair three or more times a day for a couple of years, so the small things matter: how it folds, how fast it wipes clean and how long it fits your child. The five chairs below run from a $60 fold-flat chair to a $120 chair with no fabric to wash, and four of them are rated to 50 pounds.
Whichever you pick, the straps do the safety work. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says most high chair injuries come from falls, so buckle your child in every time; the tray doesn't hold a child in place.

It was $99.99 from Amazon.

The Evenflo Eat and Grow turns into four things over the years: an infant high chair, a toddler chair pulled up to the table, a standalone toddler chair, and finally a small table and chair set. At $62.99 from Amazon, that's a lot of use for the money.
The listing rates it from 6 months up to 50 pounds, with a 5-point harness and a removable tray. The seat pad goes in the washing machine. It has a 4.7 rating from about 15,700 reviews.
It doesn't fold, and at 37 inches tall and 24 inches wide it needs a permanent spot.

The listing rates it from 6 months to 50 pounds, with a 3-position tray, a cup holder, a leg rest and a wipeable seat.
It has a 3-point harness rather than the 5-point harness on most of the others, and no recline or height adjustment.

Ingenuity SmartClean Trio Elite 3-in-1 High Chair

| Chair weight | 18.9 lb |
| Modes | High chair, booster, toddler seat |
| Harness | 5-point, 3 heights |
| Tray | Dishwasher safe |
The Ingenuity SmartClean Trio Elite is built around cleanup. There's no fabric cover to trap food: the frame wipes down, the foam insert lifts out and the tray goes in the dishwasher.
It works as a full high chair from 6 months, then as a booster that straps to a dining chair, then as a toddler seat, up to 50 pounds and about 5 years on the listing. The 5-point harness has 3 shoulder heights, the seat has 3 recline positions and the frame rolls on wheels.
It's the priciest and heaviest pick, $119.99 from Amazon and 18.9 pounds, with a 4.6 rating from about 5,800 reviews.

High Chair Safety: Falls Are the Main Risk
The CPSC estimates about 18,500 high chair injuries were treated in U.S. emergency rooms over a recent two-year period. Most happened when a child climbed into or out of the chair, when the chair tipped as a child pushed back or rocked, or when a strap, tray or lock failed.
CPSC's tips: fasten the straps snugly every time, never rely on the tray to hold your child in, stay close during meals, and don't let your child climb into the chair or stand in it.
Since 2019, every high chair sold in the US has had to meet a federal standard (16 CFR 1231) with stability and restraint requirements, and the CPSC suggests a chair made on or after June 19, 2019. If your chair is a hand-me-down, check the date on the label and look the model up on CPSC.gov for recalls.
Our article on preventing high chair falls goes through the CPSC's findings and rules in more detail.
How to Choose a High Chair
Folding or Fixed
In a small kitchen, a folding chair like the Graco Slim Snacker or the Cosco Simple Fold can be put away after every meal. The fixed chairs here are sturdier and have more settings, but they need a permanent spot of about 2 by 3 feet.
Cleanup
Food gets everywhere, so look at the seat and tray. The Ingenuity SmartClean Trio has no fabric cover at all, and the Ingenuity and Baby Trend trays go in the dishwasher. The Evenflo pad goes in the washing machine.
How Long It Lasts
The federal standard covers high chairs for children up to 3 years, and the Graco Slim Snacker stops there, at 40 pounds. Convertible chairs carry on: the Evenflo becomes a kids table and chair, and the Ingenuity becomes a booster seat for the dining table.
Harness and Recline
A 5-point harness, with straps over both shoulders, is harder to wriggle out of than a 3-point waist strap. A recline helps younger babies who are just starting solids; the Baby Trend and Ingenuity both have three positions.
High Chair Questions
When Can a Baby Sit in a High Chair?
Most of these chairs are rated from 6 months on their listings. Check your chair's own label for its minimum age and weight.
Is a 5-Point Harness Better Than a 3-Point?
A 5-point harness adds shoulder straps, so it's harder for a child to climb or slide out. The CPSC's main point applies to both: use the straps every time.
Can I Use a Secondhand High Chair?
Check the manufacture date first. The CPSC suggests a chair made on or after June 19, 2019, when the current federal standard took effect, and a recall search on CPSC.gov.
The Bottom Line
For most homes the Graco Slim Snacker is the one to buy: it folds in a second and lasts to 40 pounds. The Evenflo Eat and Grow is the best value, growing into a kids table and chair for about $63, and the Cosco Simple Fold is a light, cheap chair for travel or a second home. Pick the Ingenuity SmartClean Trio if cleanup is your biggest worry, or the Baby Trend Sit Right for recline and height settings at a lower price.
