Best Convertible Car Seats for Babies and Toddlers

A convertible car seat faces the rear for babies and toddlers, then turns to face forward with a harness. All-in-one seats add booster modes for school-age children. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says these seats usually have higher rear-facing limits than infant seats, which lets a child ride rear-facing longer.
NHTSA also says children aged 1 to 3 should stay rear-facing as long as possible, until they reach the seat's rear-facing limit. The five picks below run from about $100 to $700.

Convertible Car Seat Safety: NHTSA's Rules
- Under 1: always rear-facing.
- 1 to 3 years: rear-facing as long as possible, until your child reaches the seat's rear-facing height or weight limit. Then forward-facing with a harness and tether.
- 4 to 7 years: forward-facing with the harness until the seat's limit, then a booster in the back seat.
Install it right: NHTSA says to use the lower anchors or the seat belt, never both, and always use the top tether when the seat faces forward. A car seat inspection station, listed on NHTSA's website, can check your work.
Not sure which stage your child is in? Our car seat stage finder applies NHTSA's rules to your child and your seat's limits. After a moderate or severe crash, NHTSA says to replace the seat.
How to Choose a Convertible Car Seat
Rear-Facing Limit First
The higher the rear-facing limit, the longer your child can ride in the position NHTSA recommends. The Extend2Fit goes to 50 pounds; the others to 40.
Convertible or All-in-One
A convertible like the Extend2Fit stops at the forward-facing harness. All-in-ones like the Grow and Go, TriRide and Callisto G 360 add booster modes, so one seat can last into the school years.
Your Car and Your Routine
For a small car or a second vehicle, the Ellaris is slim and 12 pounds. If lifting a child in hurts your back, the Callisto G 360 swivels toward the door.
Convertible Car Seat Questions
When Should I Switch from an Infant Seat?
When your baby reaches the infant seat's height or weight limit. You can also use a convertible seat from birth; all five here start at 4 or 5 pounds on their listings.
When Can My Toddler Face Forward?
NHTSA says to keep children rear-facing until they reach the seat's rear-facing limit, not by age alone.
