Best Baby Swings: Compact, Portable and Multi-Motion Picks

A baby swing gives you a few hands-free minutes while your baby is awake and watched. The best one for you comes down to space, power and how long it will fit your baby: the five swings below run from a $50 fold-flat portable to a multi-direction swing with a timer, and their weight limits run from 20 to 25 pounds.
One rule applies to all of them. Swings are for awake time. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that a seated or semi-reclined position can let a baby's head tip forward and block the airway, so if your baby falls asleep in a swing, move them to a crib, bassinet or play yard.

Kids2, Ingenuity's maker, rates it for babies from birth to 9 months or up to 20 pounds. The swing and sounds run on the included USB cord, so you aren't buying batteries for the motor; one C battery powers the vibration. The listing gives 5 swing speeds, 12 melodies and 4 nature sounds.
It folds flat to store and measures 25.6 by 21.5 by 31.1 inches set up.
Good for

Swings Are for Awake Time, Not Sleep
A swing holds a baby seated or semi-reclined, and that's the problem for sleep. The CPSC says this position can let a baby's head tip forward and block the airway, and that inclined products steeper than 10 degrees should never be used for sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) gives the same advice: if your baby falls asleep in a swing, move them to a firm, flat sleep surface as soon as you can.
Read more in our article Can Babies Sleep in a Swing?
Simple rule: swing while awake and watched; sleep in a crib, bassinet or play yard, on the back, with nothing but a fitted sheet.
Know When Your Baby Has Outgrown It
Under the federal swing standard, a seated infant swing is meant for babies from birth until they try to climb out, which the CPSC puts at about 9 months. A cradle swing, where the baby lies flat, is meant only until your baby starts pushing up on hands and knees, about 5 months. On top of that, each swing has its own weight limit: 25 pounds for the Graco Slim Spaces and 20 pounds for most of the others here. Stop at whichever comes first.
How to Choose a Baby Swing
Space
Measure the spot first. The swings here range from about 25 by 21 inches (Ingenuity ConvertMe) to about 36 by 30 inches (Ingenuity SimpleComfort). If space is tight, a folding swing like the Graco Slim Spaces or the Bright Starts can be put away between uses.
Power
Battery swings are easy to move but cost more over time; the Bright Starts needs 4 C batteries. USB or plug-in swings, like the two Ingenuity models and the Graco Simple Sway, save on batteries but need an outlet nearby.
Motion
Most swings rock front to back. The Graco Simple Sway rocks side to side, and the Ingenuity SimpleComfort does both and rotates. If you're not sure what your baby likes, a multi-direction swing gives you options.
Harness and Labels
Every swing sold in the US has to meet the federal standard, which includes restraint requirements, and carry a permanent label with the maker, model and date of manufacture. Use the harness every time, and keep the model and date handy so you can check for recalls on CPSC.gov.
Baby Swing Questions
Can a Baby Sleep in a Swing?
No. The CPSC and AAP both say to move a baby who falls asleep in a swing to a firm, flat sleep surface such as a crib, bassinet or play yard.
What Age Can a Baby Use a Swing?
From birth, within the swing's limits. The CPSC says seated swings are meant for babies until they try to climb out, about 9 months; check your swing's weight limit too.
When Should I Stop Using a Baby Swing?
When your baby reaches the weight limit or starts trying to climb out, whichever comes first. For a cradle swing, stop when your baby can push up on hands and knees, about 5 months.
Are Battery or Plug-in Swings Better?
It depends on where you'll use it. Batteries let you move the swing anywhere; USB or plug-in power saves the cost of replacing batteries.
The Bottom Line
For most families the Graco Slim Spaces is the one to buy: it folds, carries and lasts to 25 pounds. The Ingenuity ConvertMe is the best value at under $90, with a still-seat mode and USB power, and the Bright Starts is a solid swing for about $50. Pick the Ingenuity SimpleComfort for motion choices or the Graco Simple Sway for side-to-side rocking. Whichever you choose, keep the swing for awake time and move a sleeping baby to a flat, bare sleep space.
