Best Baby Carriers: Buckle Carriers, Wraps and Ring Slings

A carrier lets you hold your baby and still have both hands free. The five below cover the three main types: buckle carriers with a padded waist belt, a long stretchy wrap and a ring sling. They run from about $29 to $179.
The type also changes which safety rule applies. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has a separate federal rule for slings and wraps and another for buckle-style soft carriers. For slings, it asks parents to take extra care with babies under 4 months.

|---|---|
| Age | 0 to 12 months |
| Positions | 2: in, out |

The Ergobaby Embrace is made for the first year only. It's a soft knit carrier that the listing rates from 7 to 25 pounds and 0 to 12 months, with two positions: facing in and facing out.
With fewer parts than the Omni, it's quicker to put on. The straps cross on your back, there's padding for the baby's head and neck, and the listing says one size fits wearers from petite to 4XL.
It was $99.00 from Amazon, with a 4.6 rating from about 5,900 reviews. Most babies will outgrow it around their first birthday, so plan on a second carrier after that.

Watch Out for
- Outgrown at about 25 lb or 12 months
- No back or hip carry
#3 · Best budget
Infantino Flip 4-in-1 Convertible Baby Carrier

|---|---|
| Positions | 4: in (narrow), in (wide), out, back |

The listing rates it from 8 to 32 pounds and gives four ways to carry: facing in with a narrow seat for small babies, facing in with a wide seat, facing out and on your back. It has padded shoulder straps, a waist belt and adjustable head support, and it's machine washable.
Its top weight is lower than the Omni's 45 pounds, so it may not last into the toddler years.
Good for
- About $29
- Four positions, huge review base
Watch Out for
- 32 lb limit
- Less padding than the Ergobaby carriers
#4 · Best wrap
Boba Baby Wrap Carrier
| Weight range | 7 to 35 lb (listing) |

| Length | About 198 in |
| Fabric | 95% cotton, 5% spandex |
| Care | Washer and dryer |
| Size | One size |

The Boba Wrap is one long piece of stretchy fabric, about 198 inches on the listing, that you tie around yourself and then slip the baby into, so it holds a small baby snugly against your chest. It has a 4.6 rating from about 28,900 reviews.
The fabric is 95% cotton and 5% spandex, and the listing says it can go in the washer and dryer. The listing rates it from 7 to 35 pounds, and one size fits every wearer.
Tying it takes practice, and a long wrap counts as a sling under the CPSC's rule, so the sling safety tips below apply. It was $39.99, sold by Boba and shipped by Amazon.
Good for
- Snug, soft hold for small babies
- One size for every caregiver
Watch Out for
- Takes practice to tie
- Can feel warm in summer
#5 · Best ring sling
Boba Ring Sling Baby Carrier
| Weight range | 8 to 35 lb (listing) |
|---|---|
| Carries | Front and hip |
| Size | 78 x 27 in |
| Fabric | 52% bamboo viscose, 48% linen |
| Closure | Double ring |
| Care | Machine wash |
A ring sling goes over one shoulder and tightens by pulling the fabric through two rings, so it's fast to put on and take off. That makes the Boba Ring Sling handy for quick trips and for a toddler who wants up and down all day.
The listing rates it from 8 to 35 pounds for front and hip carries. The fabric is 52% bamboo viscose and 48% linen, it measures 78 by 27 inches and it folds small enough for a diaper bag. It has a 4.5 rating from about 2,800 reviews.
All the weight sits on one shoulder, so it's better for short carries than long walks. It was $44.99, sold by Boba and shipped by Amazon.
Good for

Watch Out for
- Weight on one shoulder only
- Needs care to position a newborn well

Baby Carrier Safety: Keep the Face Visible
The CPSC counted 159 incidents with sling carriers reported between January 2003 and September 2016, and 17 were fatal. It warns about two ways a sling can block a baby's breathing. Fabric can press against the nose and mouth of a young baby who can't yet control their head, and a curled position with the chin on the chest can narrow the airway.
CPSC's sling tips: make sure your baby's face is uncovered and you can see it at all times. After nursing in a sling, move your baby so their head faces up and is clear of the fabric and your body. Check your baby often, keeping the nose and mouth clear and the chin away from the chest.
Our babywearing safety article goes through each check in more detail.
In its 2010 warning, the CPSC said 12 of the 14 sling deaths it was looking into involved babies younger than 4 months. Many of the babies who died were premature, low birth weight twins, or had a breathing problem such as a cold. If your baby is in one of those groups, the CPSC says to ask your pediatrician before using a sling.
What the Federal Rules Cover
Every carrier here has to meet a federal standard, but which one depends on the type.
- Slings (16 CFR 1228). The CPSC defines a sling as a fabric carrier for a child from full-term birth to 35 pounds, held on the caregiver's torso. That includes ring slings and long wraps like the Boba Wrap. Slings can hold a baby reclined, but the CPSC says the reclined position is only for carries on the front. Under the 2017 rule, a sling must hold three times the maker's maximum weight in testing.
- Soft carriers (16 CFR 1226). Buckle carriers like the Ergobaby and Infantino models are soft infant and toddler carriers in the CPSC's terms: sewn fabric carriers that hold a child upright, close to the caregiver. The rule tests leg openings, loads and fastener strength. Carriers made after February 22, 2025 must meet the 2024 version of the standard.
Both rules require a permanent label with the maker, a U.S. contact, the model and the date of manufacture, plus a registration card so the maker can reach you about a recall. Fill in the card, and look up a secondhand carrier on CPSC.gov before you use it.
How to Choose a Baby Carrier
Buckle Carrier, Wrap or Ring Sling
Buckle carriers like the Omni, Embrace and Flip have a waist belt and padded straps, so they're the easiest to get right and the most comfortable for long walks. A stretchy wrap like the Boba Wrap gives a close, soft hold for small babies but takes practice to tie. A ring sling is the fastest on and off, but it puts all the weight on one shoulder.
Weight Range
Check both ends. The Embrace stops at 25 pounds on its listing, the Flip at 32 pounds, the Boba Wrap and ring sling at 35 pounds and the Omni at 45 pounds. If you want one carrier for the toddler years, pick a higher limit.
Carry Positions
Only the Omni offers all four positions. Back carries become useful once your baby is heavier; the Omni and the Flip both have them. The Embrace has facing in and facing out only, and the ring sling does front and hip carries.
Who Will Wear It
If two caregivers of different sizes share a carrier, look for one-size designs. The Boba Wrap and the Embrace both say on their listings that they fit a wide range of body types.
Baby Carrier Questions
Can I Use a Carrier with a Newborn?
Most of these carriers start at 7 or 8 pounds on their listings. The CPSC asks for extra care with slings for babies under 4 months: keep the face visible and the chin off the chest.
When Can My Baby Face Out?
Check your carrier's manual for when it allows facing out, since it varies by model. The Omni, Embrace and Flip all list a facing-out position.
Is a Wrap a Sling?
Under the CPSC's rule, yes. Its definition of sling carriers covers long lengths of fabric wrapped around the caregiver's body as well as hammock-style slings.
The Bottom Line
If you'll buy one carrier, the Ergobaby Omni Classic is the one: it fits from 7 to 45 pounds with four positions. The Ergobaby Embrace is a softer, simpler choice for the first year, and the Infantino Flip covers four positions for about $29. For a close newborn hold, try the Boba Wrap, and for quick ups and downs, the Boba Ring Sling. Whichever you pick, keep your baby's face in view.
