Best Baby Sound Machines and How Loud Is Too Loud

A sound machine plays constant white noise or soothing sounds to mask household noise at naps and bedtime. They're simple devices, but volume is worth watching with babies. A study in the journal Pediatrics, summarized by Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), found that infant sound machines played at full volume can exceed safe noise levels.
The five picks below run from about $21 to $80, from a plug-in fan machine to portable, rechargeable ones for travel.

How Loud Is Too Loud?
CHOP summarized a study in Pediatrics that tested 14 infant sound machines, playing all 65 of their sounds at full volume and measuring them 30, 100 and 200 centimeters away. Every machine went above 50 decibels, the recommended noise limit for hospital nurseries, and several went above 85 decibels. All but one stayed above the nursery limit even at 200 centimeters, about 6.5 feet.
The researchers said nightly exposure at those levels could affect a baby's hearing and speech and language development. The study measured maximum volume, not how parents actually use the machines.
CHOP's advice: place the machine more than 200 centimeters (about 6.5 feet) from the crib and keep the volume low. That rules out the crib itself and the crib rail.
Watch the cord as well. For baby monitors, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says corded devices should stay at least three feet from the crib; keep a sound machine's cord out of reach the same way.
How to Choose a Sound Machine
Plug-in or Portable
Plug-in machines like the Dohm and Hatch Baby stay on the nursery dresser. Rechargeable ones like the Hatch Go and Dreamegg travel for naps away from home, but they're easy to set down too close to a baby.
Volume Control
Look for fine volume steps and a way to keep the setting. App control, on the Hatch Baby and Momcozy, makes it easy to keep the same low level every night.
Sound Type
If you only want plain white noise, the Dohm's fan is simple. If you want choices, the Momcozy has 34 sounds and the Dreamegg 21.
Sound Machine Questions
Are Sound Machines Safe for Babies?
The concern is volume and distance. Following CHOP's advice, keep the machine more than 6.5 feet from the crib and the volume low.
Should a Sound Machine Run All Night?
The study raised concerns about nightly exposure at high volume. If you run one through the night, keep it quiet and far from the crib, or use a timer.
The Bottom Line
The Hatch Baby is the best all-round pick, pairing sound and a night light on a schedule you control from your phone. The Yogasleep Dohm is the simplest real white noise, the Hatch Go the best portable, the Dreamegg D11 Max about $21, and the Momcozy has the most sounds. Whichever you buy, set it low and keep it across the room. See also our baby monitors guide.
