Best Baby Gates: Top of Stairs, Doorways and Extra Wide

As an Amazon Associate, BabyGearLand earns from qualifying purchases.

A baby gate keeps a crawling or toddling child away from stairs and rooms you can't childproof. The most important choice is how it mounts: pressure-mounted gates wedge into a doorway, while hardware-mounted gates screw into the wall. For the top of the stairs, the makers of the gates here call for hardware mounting.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has a federal rule for gates, 16 CFR 1239, for children 6 to 24 months. The five picks below run from $25 to $100.

Baby Gate Safety: What the CPSC Requires

Gates and enclosures for children 6 to 24 months must meet a federal standard, 16 CFR 1239. It tests openings, height, bottom spacing, latches and hinges, push-out strength and automatic closing. In 2021 the CPSC added two rules for pressure-mounted gates, both tied to a 30-pound push-out test:

  • Gates that use wall cups must carry a warning on the top rail that the cups must be installed. The CPSC's required warning says that without them, a child can push the gate out and escape.
  • Gates without wall cups must have visual side-pressure indicators that show whether the gate is installed correctly.

The CPSC's warning label says children have died or been seriously injured when gates aren't securely installed. Follow the manual exactly. At the top of the stairs, use a gate its maker approves there, mounted with hardware, and check the minimum distance to the first step that the CPSC requires the instructions to state.

Buy a gate that states it meets the federal standard. In 2024, the CPSC recalled about 420 Vevor gates sold on eBay, AliExpress and Overstock because they violated the gate rule; a child's torso could fit between the gate and the wall.

How to Choose a Baby Gate

Where It Goes

For doorways and the bottom of the stairs, a pressure-mounted gate like the Regalo Easy Step is quick to install and moves easily. For the top of the stairs, choose one its maker approves there with hardware: the Cardinal Gates Stairway Special, or the Ingenuity or Toddleroo with their hardware kits.

Measure the Opening

Measure at the top and bottom of the opening. Some gates, like both Regalos, have widths they don't fit even with extensions.

Height and Door

Taller gates are harder to climb; the Ingenuity is 36 inches at the arch, the Toddleroo 26. A walk-through door saves stepping over the gate, and an auto-closing door helps if you forget.

Baby Gate Questions

Can I Use a Pressure-Mounted Gate at the Top of the Stairs?

The Regalo listings say their pressure gates are for the bottom of stairs and doorways, and the Ingenuity and Toddleroo listings require hardware mounting on stairs. Follow your gate's manual.

When Can I Take the Gates Down?

The federal gate standard covers children 6 to 24 months. Remove a gate once your child can climb over it or open it.

The Bottom Line

For the top of the stairs, the Cardinal Gates Stairway Special is the one to buy. The Regalo Easy Step is the go-to doorway gate, the Ingenuity Extra Tall is the tallest with an auto-closing door, the Regalo Extra Wide spans openings up to 58 inches, and the Toddleroo Supergate Ergo is about $25.
